VMFS is designed & optimized file system for the optimum performance of the virtual machines in virtual environment. VMFS is used to store the virtual machine disk image , snapshots. VMFS optimized for use of large files in the virtual environment.

Multiple ESXi servers can read/write the same filesystem simultaneously while individual virtual machine files are locked.VMFS volumes can be logically “grown” (non-destructively increased in size) by spanning multiple VMFS volumes together.

Latest version of VMFS is VMFS 5 which is released with the vSphere ESXi. It can handle volume sizes upto 64TB & datastores upto 2TB.

Benefits of VMFS:-

  • Optimized Virtual machine access
  • Simplified provisioning & administration of virtual machine
  • Optimized storage utilization
  • Faster Recovery of VM
  • Facilitates Dynamic Growth
  • Enables High Availability with Lower Management Overhead
