Nakivo Backup & Replication Detailed Review

Deployment options are helpful where you can decide how & where you want to deploy your backup solution. So according to your requirement you can choose from available deployment options.

Nakivo backup & replication support 5 different deployment options which are :

  • Deploy as Virtual Appliance
  • Install on Windows

  • Deploy as AWS AMI

So, you have all the options available from Nakivo where if you want to deploy appliance you can download & deploy appliance on your virtual environment. If you want to install you can download windows or Linux installer & install in the way you want. If you already have NAS boxes in your environment than you can directly install Nakivo backup & replication on supported NAS Boxes.

In this post we will show you how you can deploy the virtual appliance as well as how you can install in windows server. So, you can choose from any of options you want.

Deployment & Configuration:

Deploy Nakivo backup & replication as Virtual Appliance:

Deploying the virtual appliance of Nakivo backup & replication is same as deploying any OVF files in vSphere environment. If you have previously deployed any of the OVF appliances you will see the steps are similar.

Deploy steps:

Download the virtual appliance file from Nakivo portal.

  1. Select Cluster or ESXi host.
  2. Right click > Deploy OVF Template.
  3. Browse & select your appliance file.
  4. Select name & folder for the deployment.
  5. Select the compute resource to run the appliance.
  6. Review & verify the appliance details.
  7. Read & accept the license agreement.
  8. Select storage for the appliance deployment.
  9. Select network for the appliance.
  10. Review & confirm the details.
  11. Click Finish to start deployment.

Virtual appliance deployment will take few minutes to complete. Once it is deployed successfully you can power on the appliance & you will find below screen to configure further options as part of first-time configuration & deploy.

First option is to configure network settings where you will set the IP address & other networking configuration for the appliance. Other things which you can configure is security settings, time zone, manage services etc.

Once all the thing is configured you can open the provided URL either hostname or IP from browser to access Nakivo backup & replication.

In case if you want to install in Windows server:

Download the installer from the Nakivo portal & run in the windows server where you want to install Nakivo backup & replication. Installation is quite simple just with 2 click you can easily install in any of the supported windows server.

Once installed you can access it using the browser by accessing IP or hostname. You will get the below screen as first time user setup.

Supported Integration:

Nakivo backup & replication supports the multiple environment which you can integrate to protect your infrastructure.

Below are the different supported environments which you can add & integrate:

vCenter Server or ESXi host:  You can add your vCenter server or the single ESXi host as well from which you want to backup your VMs.

Microsoft Hyper-V host or cluster: You can add single hyper-v host or the complete cluster so you can provide protection to whole hyper-v cluster.

Physical machine: If you have any physical servers in your environment than also you are protected. You can simple add in the Nakivo backup & replication dashboard to protect them.

Nutanix AHV Cluster: Nakivo backup & replication supports the nutanaix AHV as well so you don’t have to depend on other solution to provide protection to your nutanix infrastructure.

AWS account: You can integrate your AWS account so that you can take EC2 backup as well as you can use your AWS storage to keep your backups.

Microsoft Office365 account: Nakivo also provides the protection for Microsoft office 365 mailboxes. So you can easily take backup of mailboxes running on Microsoft office 365.

Oracle Database: Nakivo backup & replication does have dedicated oracle database support. So you can take backup of your oracle databases.

VM Backup:

Nakivo backup & replication allows you to take full backup, incremental backup, Image-based backup, application aware backup.

Creating backup job is quite simple in Nakivo backup & replication. You can create simple backup job, replication job, backup copy job, Site recovery job & you can create complete protection coverage report.

Creating backup job involves 5 step process where you can select what you want to backup, where you want to store your backups, schedule for your backup , retention policies & other supported advanced options for backup.

Step 1(Source): It will show you the complete infrastructure where you can select the complete vCenter Server, datacenter, cluster or single VM for backup.

Step 2(Destination): Provide the destination where you want to store your backup. You can setup Onboard repository, tapes or you can directly send your backups to the cloud storage.

Step 3(Schedule): You can schedule configure schedule to run your backups.

Step 4(Retention): Retention is critical which allows you to set various retention options such as recovery points per day, per week, per month & even for per year.

Step 5(options): Options it allows you to configure various options for your backup such as App-aware mode, change tracking, encryption, network acceleration, VM verification, Transfer mode & many more.

This is how you will see your daily screen where you can see your created jobs for backup & recovery. Once you select the job you will get the information about the job. You can also see the status of your backup job how much data is transferred, what was the speed & many more.

VM Recovery:

Nakivo VM Backup & replication comes with the many added features for recovery such as Instant VM recovery, Instant File & object recovery & cross platform recovery.

VM recovery is where you will recover or restore your VM from backup. You can create recovery job for single VM as well as for multiple VMs. So, let us see what the steps are involved in creating the recovery job.

Creating recovery job is simple involves only 3 steps where you will be select which VM to add into recovery , destination & options.

Step 1 (Backups): Here you will see all the backups you have taken using the solution. So, you can either select single or multiple servers into recovery job.

Step 2 (Destination) : Here you can select the host, datastore , network & vm folder for your restored VM.

Step 3(Option) : Here you can select various options such as recovery mode, data transfer & pre post actions for the recovered VM.

Settings:

Here you can configure all the settings related to your backup solution such as notification, backup repositories, tape management, licensing etc.

Bandwidth Throttling: Bandwidth throttling is especially useful feature at a time when your backup runs at production times or if you simply want to keep limit to bandwidth used for backup purpose. In this feature you can easily set the bandwidth throttle limit either on the all backup jobs or the specific jobs. Using this feature, you can maintain the availability of the network bandwidth.

Branding: This feature can be used to do branding of your company on the Nakivo backup & replication so you can give more customized look to your users.

Email notifications: Email notifications are always helping to be assured that everything is working fine. If there is any issue you will be notified. In Nakivo backup & replication as well you can configure your mail server to receive notification. You can choose from different available notifications & reports which you want to receive on email.

Self-backup:
This is the extremely useful feature where you can take the backup of your Nakivo backup & replication solution. Yes, you read it right you can take backup of your solution using this feature. NAKIVO Backup & Replication automatically backs up the entire configuration, including all jobs, inventory, information about connected transporters, repositories, etc.

User Management: User management is especially useful when you have multiple teams working in your organization. Using this feature, you can create users with specific roles, so they will not have all the permissions to access everything in the solution.

Events:  Events allows you to view the events in the solution so if there is any issue or problem you can easily check the events to identify the exact cause.

System migration: System migration allows you to import or export the system configuration so that in case of server failure where Nakivo is installed you can just install the new solution & import the configuration.

Inventory: Inventory tab allows you to manage the existing integration as well as if you want to add any new integration it can be done here.

Transporters: Transporter is the critical component of Nakivo backup & replication which runs actual backup & recovery tasks. They are also responsible for backup repository management. Transporter is useful when you have large environment so in that case you may need to add additional transporters.

Repositories: Repositories is where you will add storage where your backups will be stored. You can either go with local repositories or you can also use remote repositories.
