Upgrade vSphere Replication Step by Step
It is always recommended that you should keep your environment up to date so that you don’t face issues & existing known issues can be resolved with the upgrades. One of the key benefit for upgrade is the new features. Whenever you upgrade any solution you get access the newly introduced features. In this post we will see on How to Upgrade vSphere Replication Step by Step.
vSphere Replication is completely changed from 6.x to 8.x there are many features added & many changes are introduced. With the newer versions of vSphere Replication the product functionality & reliability has been improved from past versions. As of now latest version of vSphere Replication is 8.5.

vSphere Replication can be upgraded from downloading of the latest version ISO & through VAMI (virtual appliance management interface). You can use the ISO file and the VAMI to upgrade from vSphere Replication 8.3.x or 8.4.x to vSphere Replication 8.5.
Before performing upgrade it is always recommended to check the compatibility & support, Below are some of the key points which you can remember:
- You can upgrade vSphere Replication 8.3.x or 8.4.x to 8.5 by using the ISO file for vSphere Replication 8.5.
- You cannot upgrade vSphere Replication 6.5.1 to 8.5 by using the VAMI.
- You can upgrade between minor versions of vSphere Replication, for example 8.1.1 to 8.1.2, by using the ISO file and the VAMI.
Before starting Upgrade make sure that you have backup in place if something goes wrong.
So let’s see How to Upgrade vSphere Replication Step by Step:
Step 1:
Once you download vSphere Replication ISO from VMware Portal.
Upload vSphere Replication ISO to any of the datastore which is connected to all the hosts.
You need to connect it to your vSphere Replication VM.
Right Click VM > Edit Settings > Select CD/DVD Drive > Select Datastore ISO file.
Step 2:
Browse to the datastore & select vSphere Replication ISO.
Click OK to mount ISO.
Step 3:
Make Sure CD/DVD Drive is connected & Datastore ISO file is selected.
Click OK to save.
Step 4:
Login to vSphere Replication Appliance Management VAMI.
In the Summary tab you will see the details about your vSphere Replication.
Step 5:
Go to Update from Left Navigation bar.
Click Edit under Available Updates.
Step 6:
There are 2 ways to upgrade vSphere Replication.
One is using CD-ROM & another is using online repository.
In this case we will be using ISO method.
Select use CD-ROM & click OK.
Step 7:
Once you click OK you will see the available updates below.
Select the Update & click Install to upgrade vSphere Replication.
Step 8:
Read & Accept the license agreement.
You can see the Update details.
Click Install to start vSphere Replication Upgrade.
vSphere Replication Upgrade may take few minutes according to your environment.
Step 9:
Once Upgrade is completed you will see notification saying you must Reconfigure vSphere Replication Appliance.
Click on Reconfigure.
Step 10:
Provide credentials of your PSC or vCenter Server.
Click Next to continue.
Step 11:
You will see the vCenter Server. Click Next.
Step 12:
Here you will see vSphere Replication details. Click Next to continue.
Step 13:
Review the configuration & click Finish to save & exit.
Once Reconfigure is completed, You will see that vSphere Replication is completed.
Using this way you can easily upgrade vSphere Replication. Upgrade process is simple using the ISO method. If you are using the older version of vSphere Replication make sure to check all the compatibility so that you don’t face any issues.
Once vSphere Replication Upgrade is completed you can check all the VM replication status so that if there is any issue it can be resolved.
Note: In this post we have used vSphere Replication Appliance 8.5. If you are using different version few steps may differ.
