How to install vCenter Server 7 Step by Step

VMware has recently announced the vSphere 7 with whole new features, architecture & enhancements. One of the solution of vSphere 7 is vCenter Server. So in this post we will see on how you can install vCenter Server 7 step by step.

VMware has already announced previously that later version of vSphere i.e vSphere 7 & further will not support the external platform service controller & flash client. So you will be seeing that this features are removed & you can not install platform service controller separately & you can not access vCenter server using flash client. vCenter Server 7 now only comes with the appliance only mode. vCenter Server 7 now takes few additional memory compared to previous versions.

As you all already know how to install vCenter Server 7 but to just have a look at installation & changes we are posting this steps. Before proceeding with installation you must download vCenter Server appliance from VMware portal which is of around 7 GB in size.

Step 1:
Download the appliance ISO.
Mount or Extract the ISO.
Look for the folder “vcsa-ui-installer” & open the folder.
Open the win32 folder if you are running in windows machine.
Run the installer.exe file.
You will get vCenter Server installer wizard.
Click Install to start the installation of vCenter Server.

Step 2:
Here you can clearly see message “External Paranormal service controller deployment is deprecated”.
So now you won’t see option to install vCenter & external platform service controller.
Click Next to continue.

Step 3:
Read & accept the license agreement. Click Next to continue.

Step 4:
Provide the target ESXi host details where vCenter appliance can be deployed.
Click Next to continue.

Step 5:
You will get certificate warning, click yes to continue.
Setup the name & root password for the vCenter Server appliance.

Step 6:
Select the deployment type based on your requirement.
Here you will see that memory & storage requirements have been increased from previous versions to support the additional features & functionality so plan well before selecting the options.

Below are the previous requirements so you can understand how much it is increased now:

Step 7:
Select the datastore for your vCenter server storage. If you plan to setup vSAN than you can choose the option “Install on a new vSAN Cluster containing target host”

Step 8:
Configure network for your vCenter server. Make sure you have already created DNS entry before deployment so to avoid any failure.

Step 9:
Review the configuration & click Finish to complete the stage 1 deployment.

Step 10:
You will see deployment is started & it will take few minutes based on your resources.
Once deployment complete you will see continue to stage 2.
Click continue.

Step 11:
Click Next to continue.

Step 12:
Configure NTP for vCenter server & SSH access. Make sure you have proper NTP Server running to avoid issues later.

Step 13:
Setup SSO domain by providing domain name, username is already default so you only need to setup password.

Step 14:
You can join VMware customer improvement program by choosing yes here.

Step 15:
Review the configuration & click Finish to start stage 2 configuration.

You will see warning so click OK to continue.

Step 16:
Configuration may take time based on your resources.
Once configuration is complete, you will see below screen.
Click Close the exit the wizard.

Now once you open the vCenter Server using browser you will see only HTML option & flash option is removed now.

Once you login you can see updates notification directly on home screen so if you have any updates available for vCenter server that will be visible directly here.

As you saw from above steps that now you don’t need any external platform service controller, It is already embedded in the vCenter appliance. Now vCenter only supports the HTML client so if you are familiar with flash client than you need to use HTML client now.

So using this way you can install vCenter Server 7 step by step in your environment.
