How to Deploy VDP Appliance Step by Step

VMware VDP is an vSphere Data Protection which an Backup & Recovery solution from VMware for your vSphere infrastructure. VDP is fully integrated with VMware vCenter Server and VMware vSphere Web Client. VDP is powered by an EMC Avamar. VDP provides agentless, image-level virtual-machine backups to disk. It also provides application-aware protection for business-critical Microsoft applications (such as Exchange, SQL Server and SharePoint) along with WAN-efficient, encrypted backup data replication.

VDP comes with an prebuilt Linux based Virtual Appliance. A maximum of 20 vSphere Data Protection appliances can be deployed per vCenter Server. Each appliance is deployed by default with four virtual CPUs and 4GB of memory. Storage capacity for deduplicated backup data is configured during deployment.

So let’s see now how to Deploy & Configure the VDP Appliance. This post will be little longer so we will divide it in 2 section. In first we will be deploy VDP OVF Appliance & in Second we will see how to configure VDP Appliance for the first time.

How to Deploy VDP Appliance Step by Step :

Step 1:
Download the VDP Appliance from VMware Website.
You will get an OVF Appliance file.
Login to vSphere web client.
Choose the cluster on which you want to deploy Appliance.
Right Click on the Cluster or ESXi host > Deploy OVF Template.


Step 2:
Choose Local file.
Click Browse & select the VDP Appliance.
Click Next.


Step 3:
Provide the name & location for the VDP. Click Next.


Step 4:
Select the resource on which you want to deploy the VDP Appliance. Click Next.


Step 5:
Review all the details & click Next.


Step 6:
Accept the License agreement & Click Next.


Step 7:
Choose the storage where you want to deploy the VDP Appliance. Click Next.


Step 8:
Select the network for the VDP Appliance. Click Next.


Step 9:
Provide the Network details for VDP Appliance. IP Address, Gateway, DNS & Netmask.
Click Next.


Step 10:
Review & verify all the settings.
Click Finish to start deployment. It will take time depending on your environment.


Once the Appliance is deployed successfully power on the VDP Appliance. Now we will see configuring the VDP Appliance.

How to Configure VDP Appliance :

Step 1:
Once it is powered on successfully.
Access to the below URL for configuring the VDP Appliance.

https://VDP IP or Hostname:8543/vdp-configure

Provide the password. default username is root. default password is “changeme” for login. Click Login.


Step 2:
Click Next to start the configuration wizard.


Step 3:
Set the networking for the VDP. click Next.


Step 4:
Set the Time Zone for the VDP Appliance. Click Next.


Step 5:
Provide the credentials for the VDP Appliance. Click Next.


Step 6:
Provide the vCenter Server details to integrate VDP with vCenter Server.
Click on Test connection to verify the connectivity.
Click Next.


Step 7:
VDP require an storage for storing the Backups.
Provide the capacity for the new storage of VDP. Click Next.

Choose the datastores for VDP disks. You can also specify the disk provision.
Click Next.


Step 9:
Set the CPU & Memory for the VDP Appliance. This are the default values you can increase based on your requirement.
Click Next.


Step 10:
You can enable and participate in the VMware Product improvement program. Click Next.


Step 11:
Click Next to start the configuration.


Now you can see the status of the configuration. Once it is complete VDP will be rebooted to apply the changes & configuration.


As of now we have successfully deployed & configured the VDP Appliance. Once the VDP Appliance is started. You will see the VDP plugin in the vSphere web client.
