How to Create vSAN VMkernel Step by Step

vSAN requires the VMkernel for the networking. Every host participating in vSAN Cluster must have 1 VMkernel dedicated for vSAN. It is recommended to use the separate traffic link for the vSAN instead of using it with the existing management or VM network. So in order to create a VMkernel you will require 1 IP for the VMkernel configuration.

In this series of vSAN we have looked at various vSAN features and components. In this post we will see on the first step before configuring vSAN Cluster is to create vSAN VMkernel Network. You will find the step by step each settings on how to create the vSAN VMkernel network. You can create vSAN VMkernel on any of the switches either it is standard switch or the distributed switch. Before creating the vSAN VMkernel make sure you have required IP Addresses for each host in the vSAN Cluster and the networking in between is working properly.

Let’s start the vSAN VMkernel creation:

Step 1:
Login to vSphere Web Client.
Choose Host on which you want to create a VMkernel.
Go to Configure TAB > Select Virtual Switches under Networking.
Click on the icon below Virtual Switches.
