How to create VMFS datastore in EMC UnityVSA Step by Step

Dell EMC UnityVSA lets you deploy Dell EMC Unity unified storage as a virtual storage appliance. Dell EMC UnityVSA is software-defined storage that runs on industry-standard hardware and VMware ESXi, which you supply. Deploy this virtual storage appliance when you’re looking for low acquisition cost and ultimate flexibility in unified storage.

Dell EMC UnityVSA is right for entry-level hardware consolidation, multi-tenant storage instances, remote offices, branch office (ROBO) environments, and IT staging and testing.

In this series of EMC UnityVSA in our previous post we have created a LUN from storage pool but that LUN needs to be added to the ESXi host as an datastore. EMC UnityVSA provides an option to directly create an VMFS datastores that will be automatically mounted to the ESXi hosts which are added in EMC UnityVSA.

In previous post we have seen on creating a LUN and in this post we have seen on creating an datastore both steps are similar except few things. If you create a LUN then you need to mount and add as an datastore on ESXi hosts but in case of VMFS Datastore you have nothing to do once the datastore is create on EMC UnityVSA it will be mounted on the ESXi host also.

Create VMFS Datastore in EMC UnityVSA:

Step 1:
Login the EMC UnityVSA using browser.
Go to the Storage Section in the Navigator.
Click on VMware.
Select Datastores Tab.
Click on Plus icon to create a new datastore.

Step 2:
Choose the Datastore type.
As we are creating an VMFS datastore so choose Block option.
Click Next to continue.

Step 3:
Enter the Name and Description for the datastore.
Click Next.

Step 4:
Select the Pool from which you want to create a datastore.
Set the Tiering Policy for the datastore.
Set the Size of the datastore.
You can configure Host I/O Limit if required.
Click Next to continue.

Step 5:
Configure Access for this datastore for ESXi hosts.
Click on Plus icon.

Step 6:
You will get the List of ESXi hosts here which you have added in EMC UnityVSA.
Select the Host on which you want to mount this datastore.
Click OK to save.

Step 7:
You will see the Hosts listed here.
Click Next to continue.

Step 8:
You can configure the Snapshot on the datastore here.
If you don’t want then leave it as default and click Next.

Step 9:
You can configure the Replication mode and RPO here for the datastore.
If you don’t want then leave it as default and click Next.

Step 10:
Review the summary of the configurations.
Click Finish to create a datastore.

Once you click Finish, you can see the status of the Task here.
Once it is completed successfully. you can click on Close to close the wizard.

You can see Datastore details here once it is created successfully. If you have multiple Datastores that will be shown here.

That’s it. Using this way you can easily create Datastore in EMC UnityVSA step by step. If you are using in production environment then make sure to choose the perfect values and have working knowledge of storage.
