How to create LUN in EMC UnityVSA Step by Step

Dell EMC UnityVSA lets you deploy Dell EMC Unity unified storage as a virtual storage appliance. Dell EMC UnityVSA is software-defined storage that runs on industry-standard hardware and VMware ESXi, which you supply. Deploy this virtual storage appliance when you’re looking for low acquisition cost and ultimate flexibility in unified storage.

Dell EMC UnityVSA is right for entry-level hardware consolidation, multi-tenant storage instances, remote offices, branch office (ROBO) environments, and IT staging and testing.

In this series of EMC UnityVSA in our previous post we have successfully created a Storage Pool. In this post we will see on how to create a LUN from the storage pool step by step. If you haven’t yet deployed or used EMC UnityVSA then checkout links at the end of this post.

Create LUN Step by Step:

Step 1:
Login the EMC UnityVSA using browser.
Go to the Storage Section in the Navigator.
Choose Block.
Click on Plus icon under LUNs to create a new LUN.

Step 2:
Provide the details such as Number of LUNs to be created, Name & Description.
Choose the Storage Pool from which you want to create a LUN. Select the Tiering Policy for the LUN.
Specify the size of the LUN.
You can also configure Host I/O Limit.
Click Next to continue.

Step 3:
Now we have to provide access to the Hosts which will be accessing the LUN.
Click on Plus icon.

Step 4:
You will get the List of ESXi hosts here which you have added in EMC UnityVSA.
Select the Host on which you want this LUN to be accessible.
Click OK to save.

Step 5:
You will see the Hosts listed here.
Click Next to continue.

Step 6:
You can configure the Snapshot on the LUN here.
If you don’t want then leave it as default and click Next.

Step 7:
You can configure the Replication mode and RPO here for the LUN.
If you don’t want then leave it as default and click Next.

Step 8:
Review the summary of the configurations.
Click Finish to create a LUN.

Once you click Finish, you can see the status of the Task here.
Once it is completed successfully. you can click on Close to close the wizard.

You can see LUN details here once it is created successfully. If you have multiple LUNs that will be shown here.

That’s it. Using this way you can easily create LUN in EMC UnityVSA step by step. If you are using in production environment then make sure to choose the perfect values and have working knowledge of storage.

We are using iSCSI as an access to provide LUNs to the ESXi hosts. So as we have created a LUN , Now you can add datastore to the ESXi hosts. If you don’t know how to do it then check below link:
