How to Configure NFS datastore in EMC UnityVSA Step by Step

Dell EMC UnityVSA lets you deploy Dell EMC Unity unified storage as a virtual storage appliance. Dell EMC UnityVSA is software-defined storage that runs on industry-standard hardware and VMware ESXi, which you supply. Deploy this virtual storage appliance when you’re looking for low acquisition cost and ultimate flexibility in unified storage.

Dell EMC UnityVSA is right for entry-level hardware consolidation, multi-tenant storage instances, remote offices, branch office (ROBO) environments, and IT staging and testing. NFS is an Network File System which is accessed directly using the IP or Hostname of NFS Server. EMC UnityVSA also supports for creating the NFS datastore in EMC UnityVSA.

In our previous post we have seen on How to create the VMFS Datastore but in this post we will see on How to create NFS Datastore in EMC UnityVSA Step by Step. This post will be little bit lengthy because in this first we will be creating the NAS Server and then we will create File system as an NFS.

How to Create NAS Server :

Step 1:
Login to EMC UnityVSA.
Go to the Storage Section in the Navigator.
Click on File.
Go to NAS Servers Tab.
Click on Plus Icon to create NAS Server.

Step 2:
Configure the General Settings for the NAS Server:
Provide the Name for the NAS Server.
Choose Tenant of any.
Select the Pool from which you will be using storage to create NAS Server.
Choose the Storage Processor.
Click Next.

Step 3:
Configure the NAS Server Interface settings:
Select which Ethernet Port you will be using for NAS Server.
Provide IP , Net mask, Gateway and VLAN ID.
Click Next.

Step 4:
Configure the Sharing Protocols for NAS Server.
You can use Multi protocol or Windows Shares (SMB,CIFS) or Linux/Unix Shares (NFS).
As we are configuring NFS Datastore choose Linux/Unix Shares (NFS) and Check Enable NFSv4.
Click Next.

Step 5:
Here you can configure Unix Directory Service.

Step 6:
You can Enable DNS for NAS Server here.
Click Next.

Step 7:
You can configure the Replication and RPO for the NAS Server here.
Click Next.

Step 8:
Review all the configuration and click Finish to start the creation of NAS Server.

Step 9:
In the Results you can view the progress of the Tasks.
Once all the tasks completed successfully.
You can click Close to exit the wizard.

Here you can see the NAS Server Listed which you have created.

At this stage we have successfully created a NAS Server but now we will need to create a File System for the NAS Server.

Creating File System :

Step 1:
Go to the File System Tab. Click on Plus icon to create a new one.

Step 2:
Select the Protocol as Linux/Unix Shares (NFS) and the NAS Server which you have created. Click Next.

Step 3:
Provide the Name and Description for the File System and click Next.

Step 4:
Select the Pool for File System.
Specify the Size and Tiering Policy for the File System and click Next.

Step 5:
Enable the NFS Share and you can see the Local path as well as NFS Share path. click Next.

Step 6:
Configure the Default Access based on requirement.
Click on Plus Icon to customize access.

Step 7:
Here you can also provide the Access Type and Select the Hosts which will be accessing this NFS. Click OK to add.

Step 8:
You can see your Hosts are listed here. click Next.

Step 9:
You can configure the Snapshot for the NFS here. click Next.

Step 10:
You can configure the Replication and RPO for the NFS Share. click Next.

Step 11:
Review the selections summary . Click Finish to create NFS Share.

Step 12:
You can see the Tasks details here. Once completed click Close to exit the wizard.

Now you can see that your File system is created successfully and it is listed here.

Go to the NFS Shares TAB to view the NFS Share you had created and the details about it.

That’s it using this way you can easily create and configure NFS in EMC UnityVSA Step by Step.
