What is VMware Tools ?

VMware tools is the free set of utilities in one package called VMware tools for the Virtual Machines. VMware tools contains multiple drivers for the guest os to enhance performance.

VMware tools is the suite which optimizes the performance of the guest operating system inside the virtual machine. If VMware tools is not installed in the Guest OS in VM you will face some of lacks in accessing the guest operating system.

Without VMware tools you can find below issues in the guest OS:-

  • Restricted movement of mouse access
  • Low video resolutions
  • Missing sound
  • Inadequate color depth
  • Inability to copy-paste or drag and drop files
  • Incorrect display of network speed

VMware Tools includes 4 components :-

  1. VMware tools service
  2. VMware device drivers
  3. VMware user processes
  4. VMware tools control Panel

VMware tools comes built in with the ESXi & VMware workstation.

VMware tools provided in 2 formats ISOs & OSPs (Operating System Specific Packages).
