VCSA 6.5 Appliance Management Overview

VCSA 6.5 is the newer version of the vCenter Server Appliance which is announced along with the vSphere 6.5 last year. VMware has made many changes & many performance improvements in VCSA 6.5 which also comes with the new features for security & high availability. In our previous posts we have seen on How to install VCSA 6.5. VCSA 6.5 comes with the dedicated Appliance management which can be accessed from the web browser. Appliance Management is helpful in managing the vCenter Server Appliance by which user can check, monitor & manage the VCSA 6.5 configuration directly from the web browser.

So let’s see how to access the VCSA 6.5 Appliance management & what all the option you will get to manage it.

For accessing the vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 you have to put the IP address or hostname in the browser URL along with port 5480.
For e.g
https://IP or hostname:5480

https://192.168.1.1:5480

This will open the Appliance management console for you where you have to use the root credentials for login.

As you can see in the above image you will get the screen like this. Just use to root user & it’s password to login to the Appliance Management.
After successful login you will get the management screen from where you can monitor & manage the vCenter Appliance.
Here you will get 2 sections one is Navigator which will be used to navigate to different options & second is Home where you will monitor & manage the configurations.

Now let’s see each of the option one by one

Summary:
In summary you will get the information about the VCSA such as hostname,type,Product information . You can also see the Health status of the Appliance & Health related any messages if any.
You can create support bundle from here. you can also reboot or shutdown the VCSA.

Access:
Access will allow you to enable or disable the access services to the VCSA such as SSH login & Bash shell for the VCSA. So you can direct connect to VCSA using SSH or Bash shell.

Networking:
Networking give you 2 options one is for monitoring the network & second is to manage the network of VCSA.
You can view & manage the whole networking of the VCSA from here. You will get the details such as hostname, gateway, dns servers, networking interfaces & proxy settings.
If you want to change any settings you can do it from here.

Time:
This will help you to view or edit the time zone for the VCSA 6.5. You can also configure the time synchronization by providing the NTP servers.

Update:
Update will give you the information about current version & you can check for updates if any. you can also install updates from here.

Administration:
In this you can do password related tasks such as changing the root password & you can set the password expiration settings.

Syslog configuration:
This will help you to configure & manage the system logs.

CPU & Memory:
It will help you to monitor the VCSA CPU & Memory usage in percentage.

Database:
Database will help you to check the status of the database & the current utilization of the database.

As you have seen the option above which you will get for the Appliance management. This is very useful in case of troubleshooting & managing the appliance if you can not access the VCSA web client.
