How to Update or Patch VCSA 6.5

In this series of vSphere 6.5 we have seen on how to deploy the VCSA 6.5 & How to access VCSA 6.5 Appliance Management. If you have already deployed the VCSA 6.5 then it is time to update or patch the VCSA 6.5 with the latest build. Latest build will help you to improve the performance of the Appliance as well as it will fix the bugs if there is any. Recently VMware has launched the new Update or Patch for the VCSA 6.5. The build number for the latest is VCSA 6.5.0.5300-5178943. Size of the Update is around 1.6GB.

There are 2 methods for Update or Patch the VCSA 6.5. In this post we will see on first method in which you can patch the VCSA by GUI method using Appliance Management.

Below find my Current details of VCSA 6.5 & the Patch details which will be updated.

 VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.5.0

(Currently Installed)

VCSA 6.5.0.5200 Build Number 4602587
VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.5.0b
(Latest Update released on 14th March 2017)
VCSA 6.5.0.5300 Build Number 5178943

Steps to be taken before Update or Patch Process:
Take Backup or Snapshot of Virtual Machine.
If you are using external database take Backup of Database.

First you need to download the Patch from the VMware website.

Mount the Patch ISO to the VCSA 6.5 VM using vSphere web client or ESXi web client.

Step 1:
Access the VCSA Appliance Management using browser. Use VCSA IP address or hostname with port 5480.
https://VCSA IP or Hostname:5480

For e.g
 https://192.168.0.122:5480

Choose Update from the Navigator.
Click on Check Updates. You will get 2 options One is Check Repository which will check the Repository either online or offline for updates & Second is Check CDROM which will check for attached ISO to the VCSA.

Step 2:
It will check for the patches inside ISO.
You will get the details about Available Updates.
Click on Install Updates > Install CDROM Updates.

Step 3:
Accept the license Agreement & click Install the start the Update Installation.

It will take few minutes to install the updates. You can also see the status of the update process.

Once the process completed to 100% you will see that Packages upgraded successfully. You have to reboot the VCSA to complete the installation.
Click OK to close the Wizard & Reboot the vCenter Server Appliance to complete the update installation.

Using this way you can easily patch your existing VCSA 6.5 with the latest patches.
